Sea turtles are hatching on Longboat Key, and how you manage lights at night can make or break their chances of survival.
Sea turtles are hatching on Longboat Key, and how you manage lights at night can make or break their chances of survival. Sea turtle nesting season runs through October 31. There are more nests on Longboat Key’s Gulf beach than ever before in recorded history, according to Mote Marine Laboratory sea turtle biologists. Turtles are even nesting on stretches of beach that received new sand during the beach nourishment project!

As hatchlings make their way to Gulf waters under cover of darkness, artificial light from human habitation can disorient the tiny creatures, causing them to perish in the night. This year, the situation is even more critical. To protect nests during beach nourishment operations, Mote biologists relocated nests to areas that would not be affected by the project. Some of those areas may not have been home to nests in prior years, so residents and guests may not be as aware of lighting concerns.
