Police Chief Peter A. Cumming
Police Chief Pete Cumming has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Criminal Justice from Ashford University and is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute. He began his law enforcement career 35 years ago as a deputy sheriff in Sarasota County. After nearly 9 years of service with the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office Chief Cumming was appointed as a Special Agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Chief Cumming spent following 20 years serving Florida’s citizens investigating the full range organized crime and crimes of violence throughout the state. Chief Cumming was responsible for coordinating an integrated approach to criminal investigation and crime suppression, creating partnerships with other state, local and federal agencies targeting crime on a multijurisdictional level. Chief Cumming was hired by the Longboat Key Police Department in March, 2008 with the rank of Patrol Captain. In May of 2012 Chief Cumming accepted the appointment as the Department’s 9th Police Chief.
