Pets are cherished on Longboat Key. Pet owners love to walk their pets along Gulf of Mexico Drive and in our parks. The Town has placed pet friendly water fountains in Joan M. Durante Park and along Gulf of Mexico Drive.

In order to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience on Longboat Key, the Town has established the following rules and regulations pertaining to pets:

  • Animals are required to be on a leash
  • Remove and properly dispose of animal waste
  • No animals allowed on the beach.

Pet Licenses

The Town of Longboat Key does not issue Pet Licenses. However, owners must purchase a Pet license for their pets (cats and dogs) 4 months or older from either Sarasota/ Manatee County depending on what portion of the island you reside in. 

Registration Information

Pet license tags are to be renewed on an annual basis. Residents can register their pets and obtain a pet license through County licensing offices.

PLEASE NOTE:  Your pet must have a current rabies vaccination and you must have a copy of a current rabies certificate. Tag purchases will not be processed by either county without proof of a current rabies vaccination.

Instructions to License Online:

Ready to purchase your license? If you would like to license online, a convenience fee of $2.00 will apply for each transaction. Multiple pets can be licensed in one transaction. Your pet's current rabies vaccination certificate, may be scanned and uploaded or submitted later by fax, mail or email. The license will be issued after all required documents are received.

Required Paperwork

  • A current rabies vaccination certificate is required if the rabies vaccination on file has expired. Please check your certificate for correct address and pet information.

Your paperwork will not be returned to you, so please only send copies and retain the originals for your records.

To license by mail:

  1. Enclose copies of all required paperwork (rabies vaccine certificate & application). The license application can be downloaded at PetData.com
  2. Include $20 for each of your pets.
  3. Make your check or money order payable to "Manatee County Government." Please do not send cash.
  4. Mail your paperwork and payment to:

Licensing fee as follows: 
Annual pet license - $20 for each pet

Due Date
Payment for your license is due on the the expiration date of your current license. If you are licensing for the first time, you must purchase a license within 3 business days of obtaining a pet over the age of 4 months or within 3 business days of moving into Manatee County.

Sarasota County

To purchase a Sarasota County license online please do one of the following steps:

1)      Email a scanned copy of your current rabies vaccination certificate to petlicenses@sarasotasheriff.org.
2)      Fax a copy of your current rabies vaccination certificate to 941.316.1086; attention: Pet Licenses.
3)      Mail your rabies certificate to:

Before you begin your online purchase, please have the following information with you:

        1)   A copy of your pet’s current Rabies Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian.
        2)   A valid credit/debit card (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX or Discover cards are all accepted).

If you recently moved to Sarasota County and/or acquired a new pet and don't have an Activity# or last year's tag#, type 'NEW" in that particular field on the application. 

If you are a new resident or have recently moved and need to update your mailing address, send an email indicating your new address to PetLicenses@sarasotasheriff.org if it is not indicated on your rabies certificate.

Licensing fees are as follows: 
1. Unaltered cat or dog (not spayed or neutered) - $25.00
2. Altered cat or dog (spayed or neutered, or under 1 year) - $10.00
3. Replacement tag- $5.00 (A replacement tag would replace your current year's license that has been either lost or damaged).
