In order to comply with State regulations and ensure public health and safety, the Town established a . Cross-connection is a connection between any part of the potable (drinking) water system and a non-potable substance.

Every connection to the Town’s potable water system must have a backflow prevention device. This includes potable, irrigation, and fire connections. The backflow prevention device is owned and maintained by the property owner. Backflow prevention devices must be tested on an annual basis. As a convenience to property owners, the Town provides the annual tests through the utility rates. Should a backflow device fail an annual inspection, the property owner and utility customer are notified. It is then the responsibility of the property owner to inspect, fix, and recertify the backflow prevention device within a specified timeframe. The certification of the backflow shall be reported to the Town utilizing the Backflow Test Form. If the work cannot be completed within the allotted timeframe an extension may be requested using the Backflow Extension Request Form. Please contact our office to obtain the form at 941-361-6411, ext. 2218

Questions regarding the Cross-Connection Control Program should be directed to the Public Works Department, 941-361-6411, ext. 2218 or Report a Concern.
